12 Mental Math Tricks That Double as Brain Training

Mental math tricks aren't party games — they're shortcuts that let you compute fast in your head by reshaping a hard problem into an easy one. The fastest people aren't calculating harder; they're choosing a smarter path: rounding, swapping, doubling, or breaking numbers apart. Below are twelve techniques, each with a worked example you can copy and use today.

There's a bonus, too. Doing arithmetic in your head is a genuine workout for working memory and focus — you have to hold numbers, manipulate them, and track the running total without writing anything down. You won't turn into a genius (we're honest about that in does brain training actually work?), but you will get faster and more confident at exactly this, and you'll keep a skill that's easy to lose to your phone.

1. Add left to right, not right to left

Schools teach you to add from the right and carry. In your head, go left to right — you build the answer in the order you'd say it, so it's easier to hold.

458 + 327: hundreds first (400 + 300 = 700), then tens (50 + 20 = 70, giving 770), then ones (8 + 7 = 15). Total: 785.

2. Round and compensate

Ugly numbers get easy when you round them to something friendly, then correct at the end.

296 + 458: round 296 up to 300. Now 300 + 458 = 758. You added 4 too many, so subtract 4: 754.

The same move works for subtraction and multiplication — round to a clean number, then undo the rounding.

3. Multiply by 11 (two-digit numbers)

To multiply a two-digit number by 11, split the digits and add them in the middle.

36 × 11: put a gap between 3 and 6, then add them (3 + 6 = 9) and drop it in the middle: 3_9_6 = 396.

When the middle sum is 10 or more, carry the 1 to the left. 76 × 11: 7 + 6 = 13, so write the 3 and carry the 1: (7+1)_3_6 = 836.

4. Multiply by 5 using ×10 ÷ 2

Multiplying by 5 is the same as multiplying by 10 and halving — and both of those are easy.

48 × 5: 48 × 10 = 480, then halve it: 240.

5. Multiply by 9 using ×10 minus itself

Nine is just "ten minus one," so multiply by 10 and subtract the original number.

47 × 9: 47 × 10 = 470, minus 47 = 423.

6. Square any number ending in 5

This one feels like magic. Take the digit(s) before the 5, multiply by the next number up, and stick 25 on the end.

  • 35²: 3 × 4 = 12, append 25 → 1225.
  • 65²: 6 × 7 = 42, append 25 → 4225.

It always works because of how those numbers factor — a small, reliable bit of algebra you can lean on.

7. The percentage swap

Here's the one that saves you constantly: x% of y equals y% of x. They're identical, so pick whichever is easier.

4% of 75 looks annoying. Flip it: 75% of 4 = 3. Done.

Most "hard" percentages are just easy percentages wearing a disguise. Flip them and the disguise falls off.

8. Double and halve

When one factor is even, you can halve it and double the other to reach friendlier numbers — repeat until the math is trivial.

16 × 25: halve the 16 and double the 25 → 8 × 50 = 400. (You could go again: 4 × 100 = 400.)

9. Break it apart (the distributive trick)

Any awkward multiplication can be split into easy pieces using distribution.

7 × 98: treat 98 as (100 − 2). So 7 × 100 = 700, minus 7 × 2 = 14, gives 686.

The same logic builds up: 23 × 6 = (20 × 6) + (3 × 6) = 120 + 18 = 138.

10. Subtract by counting up

Borrowing across zeros is error-prone in your head. Instead, count up from the smaller number to the bigger one.

1000 − 674: go 674 → 700 (that's 26), then 700 → 1000 (that's 300). Add the jumps: 326. This is exactly how a cashier counts out change.

11. Divide by 5 using ×2 ÷ 10

The mirror image of trick #4. To divide by 5, double the number and divide by 10.

85 ÷ 5: 85 × 2 = 170, then ÷ 10 = 17.

12. Fermi estimation (the thinking person's trick)

Not every problem needs an exact answer — sometimes you just need to be in the right ballpark fast. Fermi estimation is the art of getting a defensible rough number by breaking a big unknown into smaller knowable pieces.

The classic prompt: how many piano tuners are in a large city? You don't know — but you can reason it out. Estimate the population, the share of households with pianos, how often a piano is tuned, how many a tuner can service in a year, and multiply through. You'll land within a reasonable factor of the truth, which is often all a decision needs. This is the single most useful "math" skill at work: sanity-checking a number, a budget, or — increasingly — an AI's confident-sounding output.

Why these tricks are real brain training

Notice what every trick has in common: you hold a few numbers in mind, transform them, and track a running result. That's working memory and sustained attention doing reps. Used daily, mental arithmetic keeps your "number sense" sharp — the fast internal gauge that lets you catch errors and think faster under pressure.
