For parents and caregivers

Support practice without turning home into school.

The most sustainable home routine is small, specific, and emotionally safe. You do not need to recreate a classroom. You need a clear target, a little attention, and a clean stopping point.

1

Choose the smallest useful goal

“Read this page and tell me one thing” works better than “work on reading.” Make success visible before the session begins.

2

Give thinking time

Pause before helping. If the child is stuck, offer one hint or two choices rather than taking over the entire problem.

3

Record what happened, not a judgment

Note the skill practiced, the strategy used, and one sensible next step. Avoid labels such as lazy, behind, or gifted.

Try this today

Three no-prep starting points

  • Use a ten-minute ceiling and stop while the interaction is still calm.
  • Praise a specific strategy instead of saying only “smart.”
  • Let the child choose between one reading task and one math task.
